Pi’s Open Network Set to Launch February 20, 2025!

Pioneers, Pi Network will officially transition to the Open Network period of Mainnet at 8:00AM UTC on February 20, 2025!

The Pi community is taking a huge step forward in realizing the Pi vision of creating the most inclusive peer-to-peer ecosystem and online experience in the world, powered by Pi, the native token of Pi Network, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the whole community over the past six years.

Thanks to improvements revealed in the most recent timeline update, we have surpassed the initial 10 million Mainnet migration target by reaching 10.14 million. Pi is also prepared to launch its utilities-driven ecosystem, allowing our now 19 million identity-verified Pioneers to use Pi, a cryptocurrency with practical uses and applications.

Keep checking back for additional details about Open Network on launch day! Let’s review Pi’s journey, what to anticipate at the Open Network debut, current Open Network conditions, and how you may get ready in the interim.

Our Trip Here
Pi Network’s six-year road to Open Network has been based on intentional phases and milestones that have been driven by the community, ecosystem, and Pioneers. With the start of the Enclosed Network phase in December 2021, the current Mainnet Phase 3 got underway. This meant that although the Mainnet was operational, it was protected from external connectivity by a firewall. Open Network was established during this time, which gave time for:

  • pioneers to get Pi on Mainnet and finish KYC;
  • developers to create genuine Pi ecosystem applications and utilities; and
  • The Core Team to release and improve various Pi features and utilities.

Early on in the Enclosed Network, in March 2022, a new formula for issuing mining rewards was also made public. It is based on a declining exponential model that right-sizes the Pioneers’ rewards for their contributions to the network while balancing the network’s needs for expansion, accessibility, longevity, and scarcity.

The purpose of the Grace Period, which was implemented on July 1st, 2024, to speed up the transition to Open Network, was to balance giving Pioneers enough time to complete KYC and become eligible to receive Pi on Mainnet with providing enough urgency and incentive for people to complete KYC and switch to Open Network. This technique helps free up Pi for mining by other Pioneers by preventing unverified Pi from receiving Pi on Mainnet after the rolling 6-month KYC period.

on the meantime, Pioneers could exchange Pi with other Pioneers on the network after obtaining Pi on Mainnet. For instance, PiFest 2024, a one-week event, made it easier for Pi merchants and Pioneer shoppers to exchange Pi for goods and services locally. It attracted over 27,000 active sellers and 28,000 test merchants from 160 countries, and within a few days, over 950,000 Pioneers participated. PiFest demonstrated Pi’s entire ecosystem for integrating local commerce, which includes social sharing on Fireside Forum, payments via Pi Wallet, store discovery via Map of Pi, and transactions on the Pi Mainnet blockchain. All of these features operate flawlessly across various Pi applications that are now in use.

What to Expect from Open Network at Launch

The Open Network’s introduction introduces a significant new feature to the layer-1 Pi blockchain: external connectivity. This creates a secure environment for Pi to link to external systems, increasing prospects for organizations and Pioneers.

Connecting Pi With the Outside World

By switching to Open Network, Pi will be able to connect externally to other compatible networks and systems on the Mainnet blockchain. This will increase Pi’s usefulness and reach by enabling Pioneers to conduct transactions outside of the Pi ecosystem.

Anyone can theoretically add nodes to the Mainnet blockchain by connecting to the network and running the protocol after the Open Network has been launched with the firewall turned off. Using the desktop node UI, the Core Team will progressively ask Pioneers to move their nodes from the Testnet to the Mainnet, giving preference to those with high reliability scores and previous contributions. Data about node rank will be released as soon as feasible.

Business Compliance Requirements for Network Participation

KYC (Know Your Customer) and KYB (Know Your Business) verification will be necessary for Pioneers and businesses to participate in Mainnet blockchain operations in order to preserve a secure and compliant ecosystem. All things considered, Pi aims to be a secure Web3 environment where Pioneers may communicate externally with the Pi they own—KYB-ed companies and partners can interact with actual KYC-ed Pioneers, and vice versa.

Companies can use this website to apply for KYB verification. Pioneers can view a list of KYB-verified companies on the Pi website after Open Network begins.

Update on Open Network Conditions

Based on the Open Network Conditions that were established and disseminated to the entire community in December 2023, the Open Network date was selected. Since the December 2024 timeframe update, community initiatives have continued and expedited Pi Network’s progress toward fulfilling the Open Network criteria. Now that the network satisfies every prerequisite for Open Network, the Open Network is ready!

Let’s go over the conditions in detail below.

  • Condition 1: All business, legal, product, and technical work required to get to Open Network has been finished.
  • requirement 2: Using the Pi KYC solution, 19 million Pioneers confirmed their identities, including being fully and provisionally KYC’d as initially specified in the requirement. This is more than the condition’s initial requirement of 15 million.
  • The initial target of 10 million Pioneers has been surpassed by 10.14 million who have moved to the Mainnet.
  • In order to provide the dynamic, active, and varied utility required for Pi Network to succeed in Open Network at launch, we have attained over 100 Mainnet or Mainnet-ready apps, which satisfies the 100 app target.
  • Condition 3: The Open Network debut won’t be delayed any more because of outside circumstances or an adverse atmosphere.

To foster ecosystem development and long-term utility, pioneers should continue to KYC, move to the Mainnet if they haven’t already, and interact with Pi apps in the Pi Browser before or after the Open Network launch. Similarly, community developers are urged to create, improve, and release applications that adhere to Pi Network’s guidelines and benefit the community.

What Pioneers and Developers Should Do During the Open Network Period

As new issues arise during the Open Network phase, Pioneers’ and community developers’ contributions are crucial to the network’s robustness and resiliency.

Here’s how Pioneers can engage actively:

  1. Mining and contributions: Keep mining while adjusting rates to reflect monthly restrictions and the falling exponential issuance model.
  • Building utility: Use Pi Apps, support Pi Network and Pi by using the platform and Pi, and contribute to the ecosystem’s increased usefulness. Developers are urged to improve current solutions and develop fresh ones that truly meet the needs of the Pi community and beyond.
  • Integration of local commerce: Store owners are urged to keep accepting Pi, which enables Pioneers to engage in peer-to-peer exchanges of products and services and gives Pi ongoing practicality in Pioneers’ daily lives.
  • KYC and migration: Following the launch of Open Network, the network should carry on with the KYC and migration procedure. Please complete this as soon as possible during the Open Network period if you haven’t already.

For developers:

  1. Enhance your Mainnet apps: Make sure to update your apps to meet user requirements and preferences as well as to resolve any problems that may occur after Mainnet.
  • Create new Mainnet applications: Create Pi applications to support the Pi Ecosystem. Find out more here.

Pioneers, developers, and companies are encouraged to actively work together as Pi Network moves into the Open Network phase in order to spur innovation and guarantee that Pi Network continues to be a robust, distributed, and sustainable community.
